Early in the Growtainer® evolution, we decided to specialize in custom one-off container farms for our industry peers. We knew that the production of most fast-growing shallow root vegetables such as lettuce and leafy greens – basically commodity crops – was a high volume, low margin business, and it would be very difficult for a small operator growing in a $150,000 shipping container to make any real profit or ROI. So, for many years, our business model was to build unique one-of-a-kind container farms for our industry peers. Price was not an issue; we built what the client wanted – until we developed entry level Growtainers®

In 2023, CEA Advisors and Innovative Growers Equipment (IGE) finalized a strategic alliance that gave us access to their 300,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Sycamore, Illinois, and all of the hydroponic products in the Hydrofarm catalog. We immediately moved the Growrack manufacturing from Holland to the USA, significantly reducing our cost, and we began to evaluate energy efficient LED lighting from IGE. We continued experimenting with automatic irrigation and fertigation, alternative HVAC systems, and climate control systems, focusing on temperature control, air movement, and de-humidification. Our mission was to develop affordable, optimized entry level Growtainers® for the beginning farmer market.

Today, we’re proud to offer a fully equipped Growtainer® housed in a 40’ insulated container with a separate utility area housing our multi-level Growrack® system, including LED lighting that provides between 250 and 300 micromoles per level; a 210 pint per day de-humidification system; and a 36,000 BTU mini split HVAC system with ceiling mounted cassettes. Additionally, an automated water monitoring and dosing system come with this grow container.
